The short answer

A bathroom fan should move moist air through a continuous duct to an appropriate exterior termination. A fan that sounds normal can still discharge into an attic, a soffit cavity, or a disconnected duct. Condensation on the grille, damp insulation, staining near the roof sheathing, or a musty attic smell makes the route more important than the fan’s advertised capacity.

Check the path before buying a fan

Do not assume the nearest roof vent is the correct destination. The repair may involve duct sizing, exterior flashing, a wall or roof cap, insulation, and access protection. A fan replacement should match the existing electrical setup and the room’s actual use; it should not be used to conceal a moisture route.

When to stop

Pause if you find active water, mold-like growth, damaged sheathing, unsafe attic access, suspect wiring, or a route that would require cutting a roof or exterior wall. Photograph the condition from a safe position and obtain a qualified evaluation. Keep the fan running during normal bathing when safe, but do not treat operation as proof that the assembly is dry.
