The short answer
Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator’s ice maker and dispenser as soon as a leak is confirmed, then protect the floor and find the first wet point. A leak may be at the filter head, inlet valve, tubing connection, saddle or angle stop, or the tube where it passes behind the cabinet. Water appearing in front of the refrigerator does not identify the source.
Trace it without making the spill worse
| Check | What to look for | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Dispenser and ice-maker use | Does the drip change when the feature runs? | Do not keep cycling a leaking line. |
| Filter area | Wet housing, cap, or O-ring | A filter that is not seated can leak. |
| Rear inlet valve | Wet fitting or cracked tubing | Unplug only if safe and required by the manufacturer. |
| Shutoff connection | Valve body, stem, or compression nut | Do not force a stuck valve. |
| Floor and cabinet | Swelling, staining, or damp insulation | Dry the area and document hidden damage. |
Place a towel and shallow pan where they cannot contact electrical parts. If the shutoff cannot be reached, the leak is fast, or water has entered a wall or ceiling, use the appropriate house shutoff if safe and call for help. Do not move a loaded refrigerator alone.
Choosing a repair
The replacement should match the tubing material, connector type, pressure rating, and appliance instructions. A service estimate should say whether it includes the supply valve, tubing, filter head, floor protection, cabinet drying, and testing. A new tube does not correct a valve that is leaking at its body.
Limits
This is a visible leak-triage guide, not a plumbing installation procedure. Hidden water damage, a stuck main shutoff, or an electrical hazard deserves qualified help.
