The short answer

Inspect the whole discharge path, not just the pump. A sump system can be mechanically healthy and still fail when the outlet freezes, the line sags and holds water, the check valve leaks back, or the exterior termination is buried by snow. The goal is controlled discharge away from the foundation with a route that does not create a winter plug.

What to inspect

If the line exits through a side wall, inspect the outside after a pump cycle when conditions are safe. Look for water returning toward the foundation, an outlet buried under landscaping, or a flap that cannot open. Do not add a restriction, heat source, or improvised fitting without confirming compatibility with the pump manufacturer’s instructions.

A practical winter plan

Clear the discharge route before freezing weather, mark it so snow removal does not crush it, and test the alarm and backup according to their manuals. If the basement has a history of flooding, combine the discharge review with grading, gutters, downspouts, and any municipal drainage rules. A pump cannot correct water that is being directed toward the house.
