Verdict
The Honeywell HPA5100B is a current, documented choice for buyers who need particle filtration in a room that fits its verified rating and accept ongoing filter replacement. It is distinct from the discontinued HPA300 reviewed elsewhere on this site.
Verified performance basis
Honeywell lists AHAM CADR values of 114 for smoke, 140 for dust, and 140 for pollen, and rates the unit for 4.8 air changes per hour in 190 square feet. The HEPA capture claim applies to particles 0.3 microns and larger in air that passes through the filter; it is not a whole-room guarantee.
The unit uses one R True HEPA filter and an A/A+ pre-filter. Honeywell recommends replacing the HEPA filter about annually and the pre-filter about every three months, subject to conditions and the indicator. The filters are not washable.
Fit and ownership
Size from CADR and desired air-change rate, not only a large “up to” room number. Keep the intake and outlet clear, close windows when outdoor conditions require filtration, and use the highest fan setting you can tolerate when particle levels are high.
Budget for genuine compatible filters and confirm their availability before buying. The carbon pre-filter can help with some odors and VOCs, but Honeywell states the product does not reduce or adsorb carbon monoxide.
EPA recommends source control and ventilation alongside filtration. Address smoke entry, moisture, mold, and combustion hazards at the source.
