Treat the reel as a heat-management system
Read the reel’s load table before connecting a tool. Record cord gauge and length, tool nameplate load, whether the cord is fully unwound, outlet protection, and any adapter or power strip. Never convert a 15-amp or 20-amp label into permission to exceed the weakest component.
Heat, discoloration, melting, odor, buzzing, damaged insulation, or a warm plug is a stop condition. Do not hide a damaged cord under a rug, tape a damaged jacket as a permanent repair, or use a reel outdoors unless its marking and protection allow it.
The CPSC’s electrical-safety material is a useful reminder that damaged cords, overloads, and improper connections create fire and shock hazards. It does not approve a particular reel or tool combination.
Limits
No cord was measured or load-tested. This guide does not provide a universal wattage table, wiring advice, or permission to modify a circuit. Mains work and recurring breaker trips belong with a qualified electrician.
